Wyclef Jean is an American musician and producer who was mainly influenced by hip hop. During the 1990s, he was a part of the music group The Fugees, together with Pras Michel and Lauryn Hill. After The Fugees’ unofficial split, Jean started his solo career with albums like Masquerade. Over the course of his career he has also done remix collaborations for Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Destiny’s Child and many other artists.


Wyclef Jean was born 17 october 1969. He is one of the leading artists in hip-hop. Wyclef Jean has been particularly successful in melding R&B, reggae, and rap into a cohesive form. He is well known for his songwriting capabilities for other artists as he is for his own career.
Though Jean was born in Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti. He spent most of his childhood and formative years as a musician in the United States. Jean cites reggae and Bigga Haitian as his earliest musical influences. After his move to the States he developed a love for hip-hop music.
The formation of the Fugees was Wyclef Jean’s first professional musical project. The group formed in South Orange, New Jersey in the 80s. under the moniker Tranzlator Crew. They later changed their name to the Fugees. This occurred during their move to Ruffhouse and Columbia Records .
They presented their studio debut album “Blunted on Reality” a year later. This album did well on the charts. It did not come close to achieving the success they had with their sophomore release “The Score”. This album topped the US Billboard 200 and has since obtained Platinum status six times over.

The Fugees disbanded in 1997 with only two albums under their belt. They left an indelible impression on both hip-hop and pop culture.
Jean was the first member of the Fugees to start a solo career and wasted no time in doing so. The year the group broke up he released his debut studio album “The Carnival”.
